The HITECH Act has provided funding for assistance in adopting, implementing, and achieving Meaningful Use of EHR through the development of Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers (HITRECs) across the United States. Funded through federal grants, HITRECs support primary care practioners, internists, pediatricians, obstetricians, and gynecologists who treat patients in any of the following settings:
- Practices with 10 or fewer prescribing practicioners
- Outpatient clinics associated with Critical Access Hospitals
- Community Health Centers and Rural Health Clinics
- Other settings where care is delivered to predominantly uninsured, underinsured or disadvantaged population
Specifically, HITRECs provide individualized, on-site technical assistance through certified EHR selection, successful implementation of selected EHR, adjusting workflow processes to achieve Meaningful Use, and complying with all requirements to protect the integrity, privacy and security of patients' health information.
